Indian Princess: from Play to Go

I don't know if ya'll (sorry - I'm Scotty-ed out!) remember when I posted about a fantastical collection of childrens goods over at a boutique called Wovenplay, but they had been featuring the most darling feathered headband (keeping with the feather trend!) and I've been waiting for it to hit rock-bottom sale since last spring! It still hasn't made it that far, running somewhere between $54-$44 (here, here, and here), and after creating a little feather headdress for Freida's Indian-Princess Purim costume I thought I'd tweak the headband a bit - so it can function from dress-up play to day-out accessory - before giving it to my little costume loving lady. I went with this Wovenplay inspiration:

And - for about 7 bucks - landed this:

I used a sequined headband (I had bought a pack of 3 for $1 at Forever21), scrapbook gems and craft feathers from an art supply store, a strip of craft felt, and some hot glue to hold it all together. Voilà! :)

Surreal Ceramics

I totally have a thing for ceramics that are made in the image of iconic objects (like this coffee mug, and this white vase). Here are a few things I have wish-listed for the summer season in the kitchen: Dreaming of serving up some Shavuot ice creamery in these ceramic cones!

Stashing fresh Farmer's Market berries in these ceramic berry baskets.

Sharing a ceramic diner basket of sizzlin' french fries on movie-date-night-in.

Paper Beads

Well, we're still laying low today. Freida is still running a mild fever, but thankfully slept through the night peacefully, and seems to be doing much much better. Getting her to eat is apparently going to prove difficult today - she keeps saying "no! don't want to frow up again on the floor!", so we're still taking it slow in the meal department (eg. cups of warm soup. applesauce. yogurt.), but I suppose that means she doesn't truly have an appetite.

Anyways, being home for another morning was nice and peaceful, but since she is on the recovery and not quite as under-the-weather as yesterday, she wanted to actually do something. While playing with the lacing cards and shoestring in her bedroom, she asked me if she can make a necklace... I didn't have any beads on hand, and I wasn't keen on a cheerios-around-the-house mess, so I thought I'd make some paper beads with her. I had seen a tutorial on Mini-Eco (via Creative Jewish Mom) a while ago, and I knew I had all the components on hand, so we got busy!

You basically just need some paper (I used colored card stock, but magazine print works fabulously as well) and glue (I added some glitter; at the point with Freida, sparkle = fun). Just cut isosceles triangles from the paper, wrap it around something like a pen, skewer, or paintbrush, and use some glue to hold it together. Then slide it off, let it dry, and get to lacing!

And while she still wasn't feeling well enough to do much else before lunch, she smiled proudly each time she fingered her glittery beaded jewelry. :)

Here & Hair

We're having a sick day here at home this Monday. Freida picked up a stomach virus and has been up all night (and I mean all night!) throwing up. Parenthood never ceases to amaze me, and when a child goes through 7 pairs of pajamas, 3 crib sheets, 2 queen sheets, 2 pillow cases, some carpet tiles (I kid you not!), and her sleep-deprived parents continue to pleasantly and dutifully clean up, wipe up, and change her - it's motherhood magic! My sick little girl was crying for water, but every chug she took induced another bout of vomiting minutes later. Definitely not the most glamourous part of parenting; but by far, the most radical embodiment of human care. Anyways, poor Freida is doing much better now, thank God, and has pretty much spent the day sleeping on and off and slowly ingesting fluids and soup broth. I on the other hand, have enjoyed this much-too-tired-to-do-anything-else low-key of a day; working on my recipe cards, and playing around with different hot-mess looks for my (shaitel) hair via this and that:

Hopefully Freida will be feeling better soon, but for now these options are nice break from my usual.

Weekend Round-up!

This iLog totally made me smile. What do you know? Lag BaOmer meets 2011! (Humor aside, this wooden iPad charging dock would make for a fabulous Fathers Day gift, don't you think?)

Here are some other links from around the web that I have been meaning to share:

- A shocking and most fantabulous Target collaboration!!!

- Honest Pinocchio - most charming of classroom supplies.

- San Francisco audacity!

- Summer decorating tips from the pros via Anthropologie.

Also, if you are in the greater Los Angeles area, my supermom of a sister-in-law's (Esther Schwartz) closest-to-homeschooling preschool, Gan Chai, is now open for 2011-2012 registration!! If you want the benefits of homeschooling + the social and developmental achievements of a preschool that will help instill independence and cultivate young jewish pride - visit Gan Chai online for more information. Freida is a die-hard fan! :)

Wishing you all a lovely weekend! Enjoy the food + fire festivities!!
